Mission/Vision

Vision: Enlightened and empathetic society in which children with disabilities have equal rights and opportunities and live with dignity.

Mission: Work with children and families to address the cause and effect of disabilities, particularly neuro-psychiatric and developmental disabilities at family, community and national level.

Collaborating/ partner agencies: Provincial health department, related NGOs and primary health centers

Areas of Focus (projects)

    1. Prevention of disability and distress among the psychologically affected children and their families through early identification and intervention.
    2. Enable parents and families to facilitate development of children, particularly children with special needs.
    3. Provide confidential and nourishing environment to physically, emotionally, and sexually abused children, and children in difficult situation.
    4. Offer diagnostic, therapeutic and counseling service to children suffering from epilepsy, developmental delay, emotional and behavior problems.
    5. Human resource development in the field of child mental health.

Main Activities/ Descriptions of the project (2004)

    1. Establish a national resource center for child mental health at Chey Chumneas Hospital, Takhmau, Kandal province.
    2. Work in close cooperation with the provincial health department and primary health centers to establish an integrated service delivery model'.
    3. Reach children, teachers, and child-minders in pre-, primary and secondary schools to promote mental health.
    4. Enlist the active collaboration of the traditional healers, 'Kuru Khmers' and monks to establish a referral system and promote culturally appropriate child mental health practices.
    5. Encourage volunteers from among professionals and para-professionals to participate in research, documentation, publication and service delivery.
    6. Form 'self-help groups' in the community to promote child mental health at the family and community level.

Beneficiaries

Our team offered 4068 consultations during the year 2001, of which 52% are male and 48% are female. 36% of the consultations were developmental delay and related problems, 40% epilepsy and other neuro-psychtirc problems and 24% of the children sought help for psychological problems. Most of them (70%) were referred by clients getting help from our center. 15% of the referrals were by NGOs working with children and another 10% was by other hospitals. Some they came to CCMH after knowing about the center and it's activities through newspaper or television. 40% of the clients come from Phnom Penh and surroundings, 30% from Kandal province and another 30% from 13 provinces of Cambodia.

Other Information

CCMH team: The team at CCMH, Takhmau consists of one consultant child psychiatrist, one general psychiatrist, one general physician, three psychologists, a head nurse, an assistant head nurse, two physiotherapists and three primary care nurses. An office assistant, a driver, two gardeners and a cleaner offer support service.
