Mission/Vision:Handicap International main priorities are the prevention of disabilities and the rehabilitation of disabled people. To achieve this Handicap International is building up programs that have a preventive and curative aspect and are aiming at developing the autonomy and integration of persons with disability.

Main Activities/ Descriptions of the project (2004)

Physical & Social Rehabilitation:

  • To improve the quality of physical social and economical rehabilitation of disabled people
  • To increase access to services by disabled people,
  • To raise community awareness of disability issues.
  • To develop and support the capacity of Cambodians to take over PRC services

Handisport project:

  • To support two disabled sports clubs in Bat Dambang and Siem Reab provinces.
  • To develop sports activities for disabled people for rehabilitation purposes.
  • To focus on including children and women in sports activities.
  • To raise community awareness of disability issues.

Capacity Building of People with Disability n the Community (CABDIC):

  • To improve the ability of people with disabilities and their families through child rehabilitation, school integration self help group's promotion and increased community awareness.
  • To increase the autonomy of CABDIC staff to run the program toward local NGO

Cambodian Mine/UXO Victim Information System (CMVIS):

  • Maintain and coordinate a sustainable information-gathering and referral network,of mine/UXO casualties in Cambodia.
  • Analyze and disseminate mine/UXO casualty information nationally and internationally.
  • Support the capacity and development of the Cambodian Red Cross in undertaking the activity independently of HI-B.

Land Use Planning in Mined Areas (LUPU): To ensure demined land is allocated to the people most in need, To prevent land disputes between involved stakeholders

Mine/UXO Risk Reduction (MRT): To reduce death and injury caused by landmines and UXO and to mitigate the risk to community development by providing safer access to resources and land which has been lost

Beneficiaries: All type of Disabled Person, Land Mine Victims and other Vulnerable Groups

Location of Project: Bat Dambang, Siem Reap, Takeo, Kampong Thum, Banteay Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Otdar Mean Chey provinces. Each Rehabilitation Centre offers an outreach programme. In each province, CABDIC covers 2 districts. CMVIS operate at all provinces of Cambodia. The Data Management Office is located in Cambodian Red Cross Headquarters, Phnom Penh.

Other Information: HIB focus on the development and maintenance of Integrated Rehabilitation Centres in four provinces along with the development of community based programmes providing specialized physical and social services to disabled people. The two main projects in this area include: Physical and Social Rehabilitation Centres (providing social services, orthopaedics, support to local institutions, disabled sport activities, referral services, and advocacy) and the CABDIC programme (including self-help groups, the support and preservation of community based initiatives to help disabled people themselves, rehabilitation and school integration of children with disability). In addition to rehabilitation projects, HIB has worked on a number of interventions designed to prevent impairment and disability, particularly in the area of landmine accident prevention.

To improve the autonomy of people with disabilities, their access to services and their quality of life, Handicap International in Cambodia is dedicated to:

  • Contributing to awareness raising and advocacy on disability issues.
  • Providing services in the areas of physical rehabilitation and the social and economic integration of people with disabilities,
  • Preventing handicap, disability and impairment particularly in the area of disabilities caused by physical dysfunction and accidents
