VISION

Association of the blind in Cambodia (ABC) will ensure equal services direct or indirect, adding value for all Visually Impaired in Cambodia.

MISSION

Mission To work in partnership with MOSALVY, other Ministries, and other NGOs to develop an association that empowers blind and visually impaired people through increased capacity of skills, training, socialization, ability, and knowledge.

Also the ABC is a self-help organization that advocates members empowering themselves. The ABC was established to promote and foster equal opportunities and full participation of blind and visually impaired people in Cambodia.

Objectives of ABC

  • Firstly ABC needs to ensure that as an Association, it is able to be sustainable and continues to Survive, then determine to be Successful in all it’s activities, and finally needs to be Significant for all blind Cambodians today and into the future.
  • To protect the rights of blind and visually impaired Cambodians
  • To increase the Blind & Visually Impaired mobility and functional skills
  • To increase the Blind & Visually Impaired access to Health care and ensure early detection of preventable eye conditions.
  • To ensure that Blind & Visually Impaired have equal opportunities to attend school
  • To promote education for blind children and blind adults
  • To improve the physical and mental outlook of blind Cambodians through education and training
  • To increase the opportunities for Blind and Visually Impaired and their families to generate income, through skills training employment and self employment.
  • To ensure that Blind and Visually Impaired have a voice and that Government and civil society organizations include blind Organizations in the decision making process
  • To alleviate extreme poverty amongst Blind and Visually Impaired people and ensure that they have equal access to social security and income generation programs
  • To actively represent the blind of Cambodia to Government, international and local groups
  • To foster the training of blind Cambodians in job related skills.
  • To expand the information gathering and administrative centre for the Blind in Cambodia.
  • To disseminate information through print or other media to improve the awareness and understanding of families of the public and blind families about blind and visually impaired issues
  • To foster education of the blind about blind health issues and the prevention of blindness
  • To educate, and train blind persons in technological developments and to find ways to utilize technology for their support and development
  • To foster community family based rehabilitation programs to support blind people.
  • To promote sporting opportunities for blind and visually impaired people.
  • To research the statistics of the Blind living in Cambodia to better understand their issues
  • To grow the existing library as part of ABC’s Administrative Centre.

Project Activities:

ABC is operating 4-project activities in Cambodia: Vocational Training, Advocacy, Education and Rehabilitation.
I- Vocational Training:
the massage teacher is practicing with the studentsThe massage training program has been implementing in Kamot, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville province and Phnom Penh city, it takes up to six months to train blind masseurs on anatomy, physiology pathology, massage styles, and English.

The training of massage skills required the blind masseurs to have qualifications such as good health, strong aptitude, good self care and high standards of hygiene.

The Computer Training Program for blind and visually impaired people has been used JAWS, MS Office program, Open Books, Zoom Texts, Braille Display, E-mail and Internet, but for JAWS computer the students must be knew the English.

The Door-mat knitting course for Visually Impaired Women: Each of the door-mat knitting courses for the blind and visually impaired women extends up to six months; they can produce 5-door-mate a day and save the money 18 cents of USD a door-mat.

II- Education Program:
Blind children are studying in the Public SchoolThis program has been established in October, 2005 to assist the blind children in rural communities to study Braille at Krousar Thmey's blind school Organisation and public school integration class.

In October, 2006 the Association of the blind in Cambodia cooperated with the Krousar Thmey Organisation has established an Integration Classes for blind Children into Public Schools in Kampong Thom, Prey Veng, Kampot and Siem Reap.

III- Rehabilitation program:
There two projects have been operating
  • Provincial Development Project (PDP): was implemented in many provinces such as Battambang, Siem Reap, Kampong Thom, Kompong Cham, Prey Veng, Kampot, Preahvihear, Pursat and Bantheay Meanchey to assist blind and visually impaired people.
    The project activities are:
    1. Assessment and research on blindness;
    2. Orientation on Mobility/ daily living skill;
    3. Identify clients who have eyes problem and blind children referral them to Eye Unit, school for blind and public integration class;
    4. Income generation for the blind adult;
    5. Networking with Authorities, Governors, Local NGOs and International NGOs;
    6. Development of membership of DAC.

  • Communication Base Rehabilitation Project CBR) is supported fund by Dark and Light Blind Care Foundation. To assist Blind and Visually Impaired people on 6 target districts working at Kampong Cham such as: Tbong Kmom; Orieng Ov; Kroch Chmar; Srey Sonthor; Pohnea Kraek and Memot
