International Day of the Disabeled December 03, 2004

Cambodians will join people around the world to celebrate, once again, promoting the abilities and the contribution of people with disabilities in socio-economic development. This is the sixth time that Cambodia will celebrate this event. The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons, aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and to mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. The theme of the day is based on the goal of full and equal enjoyment of human rights and participation in society by persons with disabilities. This theme was established by the World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons, adopted by the General Assembly in 1982.

International Day of Disabled Persons is not organized by Disability Action Council (DAC) Secretariat but Disability Action Council (DAC) just takes facilitating role with involvement, contribution and support from all key players including government, IOs, NGOs, private companies, individuals and people with disabilities.

International Day of Disabled Persons is an appropriate tool for public awareness on disability issues. It is a great opportunity for people with disabilities to meet , share, and show their ability to the public and get policy makers to be aware of the disability issues.
