Committee on Social Development to Review Pathways to Building Inclusive and Sustainable Societies
The Committee on Social Development, made up of ESCAP member countries, will meet at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok, from 24-26 September. The Committee will provide guidance to ESCAP in the field of social development, social policies and protection. In particular, the Committee is expected to focus on ways to build inclusive and sustainable societies, through managing emerging and persistent risks and threats to development, such as food insecurity, demographic changes and health-related risks, promoting various social policy and protection interventions. The Committee will also explore ways to effectively reduce disparities and exclusion, and discuss key issues faced by persons with disabilities and ways to address the exclusion of this marginalized population group. Besides reviewing the activities and programmes carried out by ESCAP in the field of social development, the Committee will also consider strategic directions for the work of ESCAP in the coming years. This will be the first session of the Committee under the revised structure of ESCAP.
